History
On June 11th, 2021, the gimmick Twitter[1] account Something is Missing (@somethinmissing) was launched by Twitter users @whitebins and @heyloishehe. On the same day, the account posted its first tweet[2] with an I Had to Do It to Em meme that had Lucky Luciano edited out (shown below). The tweet received over 2,600 retweets and 30,100 likes in three weeks.
Starting on that day, the account posted more edits of famous memes in which their key component was edited out (examples shown below).
Features
Something is Missing posts edits of memes and other culturally significant images and videos in which a key component, usually a certain character, is edited out so that only the background of the meme remains.
Highlights
On June 24th, the account posted edited intro credits of SpongeBob SquarePants, with the tweet gaining over 14,300 retweets and 200,000 likes in one week (shown below, left). On June 28th, the account posted an edit of Two Bros Chillin' in a Hot Tub meme, with the tweet garnering over 39,700 retweets and 392,600 likes in two days (shown below, right). As of June 29th, 2021, the June 24th and 28th posts were the most popular posts made by the account.
Traffic
Within one hour of its first tweet, the account received gained over 1,300 followers on Twitter. As of June 29th, 2021, the account had over 157,200 followers.
