About

RoastHimJim is a Twitter gimmick bot that creates AI-generated "roasts" or insults, paired with a crudely drawn frog in the style of Apu Apustaja or Pepe the Frog. The Twitter account began operating in May 2023, and rapidly gained followers through people tagging the account in various Twitter threads in order to elicit a custom-made "roast." The account has also received backlash from other internet users who frequently describe it as chronically unfunny, cringe and annoying.

History

The Twitter account @RoastHimJim began operating under the title "Jim Is Here To take Care Of Him" on May 12th, 2023. The account's first few posts consisted of a text-based tweet combined with an image macro of a crudely drawn frog, in the style of Apu Apustaja, typically dressed in a suit.

On May 12th, 2023, @RoastHimJim posted one of his earliest tweets,[1] writing, "Looks like they'll have to cut back on their avocado toast and fancy coffee if they want to make those mortgage payments. Good luck affording those luxury lifestyle choices now!" On May 25th, @RoastHimJim shifted to his present tweet format,[2] which is a black image text box accompanied by a drawing of Jim (seen below, right).

On May 29th, @RoastHimJim[3] posted one of its first tweets to gather over 4,000 likes (seen below, left). On June 9th, @RoastHimJim[4] posted a tweet that gathered over 9,000 likes, with several replies questioning if the response was ai-generated (seen below, right).

On June 24th, the creator of @RoastHimJim, @JimAIstudios, posted a tweet[5] that read, "Once again, one of our AI creation, @RoastHimJim has broken a new high in term of engagement. / 17.3 million in a single day. / At current rate the bot will reach 200k followers by early/mid next week" (seen below).

Features

@RoastHimJim is a Twitter bot that uses AI to generate custom-made roasts. Users are able to generate roasts based on other people's tweets y tagging the bot as a reply. @RoastHimJim is also associated with a cryptocurrency called $Jim and routinely collaborates with other crypto-influencers on Twitter.

On July 7th, Twitter user @TeddyCleps posted a tweet[6] announcing a collaboration with RoastHimJim, calling it "one of the coolest projects with an unparalleled growth among the community – with almost 100k organic followers within a month!"

Online Reactions

While @RoastHimJim has steadily been rising in virality and engagement since its inception in May 2023, it has also been criticized for generating unoriginal, boring or unfunny roasts. On June 25th, 2023, Twitter[7] user @benesherick posted a reply to a @RoastHimJim tweet saying, "Cannot wait til you get banned baby bro," gathering over 2,000 likes (seen below, left). Also on June 25th, Twitter[8] user @NotABigJerk posted a tweet that read, "whoever is behind that roast him jim account should be thrown into the Brazen Bull," gathering over 3,000 likes in a month (seen below, right).

On July 17th, 2023, Twitter[9] user @HeheWaitWhut posted a tweet saying, "What the fuck is this," in reference to a @RoastHimJim post. the tweet gathered over 6,000 likes in a week (seen below, left). On July 23rd, Twitter[10] user @MNateShyamalan posted a tweet criticizing the bot and calling it unfunny, gathering over 45,000 likes in two days (seen below, right).
