Rate My Plate

About

Rate My Plate is a popular Facebook group based in the United Kingdom where people post pictures of food they have made and ask other users of the group to comment on it. The group went viral in February of 2019 following a post in which a woman posted her breakfast, inspiring much mockery among the group's members.

History

Rate My Plate was founded in May of 2018.^[1] It began by posting several pictures of dinners, which users commented upon (examples shown below).

The group quickly became a hub for people to roast the dishes others posted, as Rate My Plate would post submissions from users who gave their first name and last initial. For example, user Ben Bowen commented "This is what falls out of Katie price after she has sex" to a post submitted by "Martyna W," gaining over 940 reactions (shown below, left). User Lydia Chaplin commented "What in the vegan fanny flap is this?" to a picture of a lettuce sandwich submitted by Shaun W, gaining over 5,000 reactions (shown below, right).

Carol C's Bacon, Eggs and Beans Roasting

On February 2nd 2019, Rate My Plate posted a bacon, eggs, and beans dish by "Carol C" which became to date the most popular post in the group, gaining over 36,000 reactions.^[2]

The post was intensely mocked within the group. Some popular comments include a post by Paul Madden which read "What did you cook that in carol, the fucking tumble dryer?", gaining over 36,000 reactions. User Brendan Timber Gelston wrote "Ah leave her alone, she has enough shit on her plate," gaining over 2,700 reactions. The roasting of the dish made national news, as several notable publications wrote stories about the dish, including The Sun,^[3] Daily Mail,^[4] and eBaum's World.^[5] The press helped the group quickly reach over 1 million likes.^[1]
