About
RakugakiAR is an Augmented Reality app for IOS systems where users can bring to life drawings and interact with them. The app was developed by the company "Whatever."
History
On July 31st, 2020, the company "Whatever"[1] released the application on the Japanese app store, with a free download for the first 1000 users (shown below, left). After the app reached the top chart for free applications, they decided to extend the free promotion for several more days[2] (shown below, right).
Quickly after the release, the application gained popularity in both eastern and western Twitter. On August 3rd, 2020, a video of drawing of Dimitri from Fire Emblem: Three Houses shared by the user Tokinox[3] scored 67,100 likes and 30,200 retweets (shown below, left). Hours later the user greatestjubilee[4] shared a video of the character Edelgard from the same series, getting 11,300 likes and 2,300 retweets (shown below, center). One of the most popular examples was shared by the user ruruepa[5] showing an error from the app, where it selected the border of the drawing instead of the actual image, this video got 118,200 likes and 40,500 retweets (shown below, right).
Features
The App allows the user to scan a drawing (or multiple) to bring it to life in a carboard-like style and interact with them in different ways, such as:
