YouTube MrBeastify, known also as MrBeast YouTube Extension, is an extension for web browsers that adds cutout images of YouTuber MrBeast to all thumbnails on YouTube. Inspired by a video from the YouTube channel Unnecessary Inventions, the extension went viral on social media in early July 2023.
History
On June 17th, 2023, YouTuber[1] Unnecessary Inventions uploaded a video titled "I Created An App That Adds MrBeast to EVERY Thumbnail" (shown below) in which he presented MrBeastify,[2] a website that added a randomized cutout image of YouTuber MrBeast to the user-uploaded image. The video (shown below) received over 124,000 views in one month.
On June 18th, 2023, developer MagicJinn released YouTube MrBeastify,[3][4][5] an extension for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and other browsers inspired by the video. The extension added a randomized cutout image of MrBeast to every thumbnail on YouTube (examples shown below).
Features
YouTube MrBeastify extensions add a randomized cutout image of YouTuber MrBeast to the thumbnails of all videos on YouTube. The pool of cutout images consists of images of MrBeast taken from the thumbnails of his own videos, as well as one image of Fake MrBeast.
Highlights
On June 30th, 2023, Twitter[6] user @theJayAlto tweeted about the extension, with the tweet gaining over 90 retweets and 1,000 likes in two weeks (shown below). On July 2nd, gaming news website Dexerto tweeted[7] about it, with the tweet gaining over 6,300 retweets and 72,200 likes in nine days. The post assisted the viral spread of the extension online in the following week.
In early July 2023, multiple tweets sharing images of thumbnails modified by the extension went viral on Twitter. For example, on July 3rd, 2023, YouTuber Shayy tweeted[8] a MrBeastified thumbnail of one of their own videos that received over 630 retweets and 5,900 likes in one week (shown below, left). Later that day, YouTuber j aubrey tweeted[9] modified thumbnails of four YouTube videos, with the tweet gaining over 1,600 retweets and 25,600 likes in one week (shown below, right).
Traffic
As of July 10th, 2023, three weeks after its release, the extension was downloaded over 30,000 times from Chrome Web Store and over 1,600 times from Firefox Browser Add-ons.
