Kiribati's Twitter Account or Kiribati's X Account (@KiribatiGov) is the official X / Twitter account for the government of the Republic of Kiribati, an island country in Oceania. In February 2024, the account went viral on social media over its humorous replies and posts, similar to Wendy's social media account, which many perceived as humorous shitposting.

History

On November 20th, 2023, the official X^[1] / Twitter government account for the Republic of Kiribati was launched, making several posts on the same day.^[2]

The account did not achieve online recognition until mid-February 2024. On February 17th, 2024, X^[3] user @VoxDocVoxDei posted a map of Kiribati showing the locations of its four population centers, Poland, Paris, London and Banana, commenting, "I think Kiribati just gave up when it came time to name cities." The post (shown below, left) garnered over 2,500 reposts and 22,000 likes in five days.

On February 19th, the official Kiribati account quoted^[4] the post, replying, "Fine. You're not invited" (shown below, right). The post garnered over 45,000 reposts and 589,000 likes on X in three days.

Following the post, the account saw a major surge of followers, growing from several hundred to over 20,000 followers in one day.^[5]

The post inspired an influx of memes about Kiribati on X / Twitter in the following days, with @KiribatiGov proceeding to humorously reply to the posts. For example, on February 19th, 2024, X^[6] user @AlexWaveDiver posted a Three-Headed Dragon meme about Kiribait's towns and villages which received over 360 reposts and 5,600 likes in three days (shown below, left).

On February 20th, @KiribatiGov quoted the post, commenting that the memes result in the social media manager having to explain the meaning of modern internet slang and phenomena to their management. The post (shown below, right) received over 5,600 reposts and 103,000 likes in two days.

The official government account for Kiribati shares news about the country. Starting in February 2024, the account began humorously replying to posts about Kiribati made by users on X / Twitter.

As of February 22nd, 2024, the official account for the Republic of Kiribati had nearly 35,000 followers on X / Twitter.
