About

Instafest is a third-party app for the streaming service Spotify that generates a festival lineup based on a user's musical preferences and listening habits. Created by developer Anshay Saboo, the app went viral on social media in November 2022 as people shared their custom-made music festival lineups on social media, notably leading up to that year's Spotify Wrapped.

History

On November 26th, 2022, computer science student Anshay Saboo released Instafest,^[1] a third-party app for Spotify that generates a custom three-day festival lineup based on a user's musical preferences.

Starting on that day, users on social media shared festival posters generated by the app. For example, on November 26th, Twitter^[2] user @KennTheSky posted a poster that gained 10 retweets and 420 likes in two days (shown below, left). On November 27th, Twitter^[3] user @kadiaverse shared a poster that received over 510 retweets and 3,700 likes (shown below, right), later adding a disclaimer that the festival was not real.

Also on November 27th, 2022, Twitter^[4] user @GriffithsTM7 shared a poster generated with the app that gained over 160 retweets, 1,500 likes and 4,100 quote tweets as users quote tweeted it with their unique posters.

Features

Instafest generates a three-day music festival lineup based on a user's listening history on Spotify over a certain period of time, assigning the three most popular artists as headliners. The data collection period can be set at four weeks, six months and all time, with three poster styles available (example shown below).

Use in Memes

Following the viral spread of the app on Twitter, Instagram and other social media websites in November 2022, users also created memes about it. For example, on November 27th, Twitter^[5] user @exoscmdump posted a Will Byers Crying meme about Apple Music users that gained over 50 retweets and 180 likes in one day (shown below, left). On November 27th, 2022, Twitter^[6] user @luckycharmstv posted a meme that gained over 110 likes in one day (shown below, right).
