About
Felines of New York is a single topic blog dedicated to showcasing a variety of domestic cats and humorous quotes that are fictitiously attributed to the feline subjects. It is a parody of the wildly popular urban life photography project Humans Of New York. Each Tumblr entry features a portrait of a cat paired with a "quote" from the cat.
Origin
The Tumblr blog Felines Of New York was launched by New York-based comedian and writer Jim Tews[2] on February 3rd, 2015. According to MTV's interview with the blogger, Tews began the project as a straightforward parody of the Humans of New York project and its sentimentalist approach. The first entry on the blog, which features "Lily" from Queens, New York, received 186 notes.
Spread
On February 8th, Tews created an Instagram account[3] for the blog under the handle @FelinesofNY. The most popular blog entry to date is "Don Sr., the Bronx", which has garnered 1,087 notes. As of mid-March 2015, there are more than 100 posts tagged "felines of new york" on Tumblr.[5]
On March 9th, MTV News[2] ran an interview article with Tews, the creator of the blog who also writes for the publication. On March 11th, Washington Post[4] mentioned the blog as the latest example of Tumblr's thriving meme culture in an article titled "Move over, Reddit: Tumblr is the new front page of the Internet."
