History

Prior to November 27th, 2022, the Chinese technology company Tencent launched Different Dimension Me[1] (ch. 异次元的我), an AI model-based website that is able to generate anime versions of provided imagery, on its QQ instant messaging service (main page screenshot shown below). It is purported that the generator uses the Stable Diffusion AI to generate the imagery.[2]

Starting on November 27th, 2022, images created with Different Dimension Me started spreading outside of the Chinese web, with the website gaining initial popularity among Spanish-speaking users. For example, on November 27th, Twitter[3] user @Jeff_Ace4Ace posted about discovering the AI, sharing the anime version of his photograph generated by the website. The tweet gained over 40 retweets and 450 likes in three days (shown below, left). Later that day, Twitter[4] user @ForestGod4 replied to the tweet with the AI-generated anime version of GigaChad (shown below, right), with more users joining in on the trend in the following hours.

In late November 2022, the website achieved virality on social media as users shared their own portraits and images of other people and characters generated by the website.

Features

Different Dimension Me creates anime-style versions of uploaded imagery, namely portraits of people and characters. The result is presented through a short music video in which the generated image is revealed.

While unconfirmed, many assume that the generator uses the Stable Diffusion AI model and its img2img sampling script in particular.

Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion is a neural network AI that, in addition to generating images based on a textual prompt, can also create images based on existing images. In September 2022, the network achieved virality online as it was used to generate images based on well-known memes, such as Pepe the Frog.
