About

Crypto Bros Taking Ls or @CoinersTakingLs refers to a Twitter gimmick account that documents cryptocurrency fanatics, mostly men, losing money or making mistakes to the delight of people against the crypto community. Many of the posts are related to NFT blunders, Bitcoin mess-ups and different scandals involving the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection. It started posting content in early 2021.

History

On May 19th, 2021, the Twitter[1] account called Crypto Bros Taking Ls posted its first tweet, a screenshot of a Quora question from an amateur Bitcoin investor about their blockchain exchange on Riptrex not responding. Riptrex was revealed to have shut down, most likely being a scam and a successful one. Over the course of one year, the tweet received over 430 likes (shown below).

The account posted multiple tweets on the day of its creation, May 19th, 2021, like one[2] that received roughly 2,900 likes in one year. It included screenshots of a Redditor's post to /r/Bitcoin about their bank account being barred due to fraudulent payments made by them using illegal, Zelle money transfers (shown below, left).

Throughout its first year of posting content, the account consistently received increased engagement, whereby in early 2022, some of its tweets were receiving upwards of 200,000 likes. For instance, on May 13th, 2022, the account posted its most viral tweet[3] as of late May 2022, comprised of screenshots of a Bored Ape NFT owner named Mike Majlak saying "they like the artwork" of their Bored Ape featured in their profile picture. Over the course of 10 days, the tweet received roughly 275,000 likes (shown below, right).

Features

A majority of the account's content is based on screenshots of subreddits, Discord messages, YouTube thumbnails and 4chan threads related to cringy interactions and embarrassing losses endured by "Crypto Bros." The account's success is in tune with a general hatred for NFT and crypto success that many online feel is a "flash in the pan" trend due to unnecessity. Memes related to this general bias include Screenshotting NFTs, NFT Stands For… and outrage over Twitter's Hexagonal Profile Pictures, among others.

Following

Over the course of one year, the Crypto Bros Taking Ls Twitter account amassed roughly 457,600 followers.

Bored Ape Yacht Club / All My Apes Gone

Crypto Crash 2022

Starting in January 2022 and notably trending online in May 2022, a crypto crash became apparent online as the price of major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum rapidly decreased in value over the course of one week. The Twitter account Crypto Bros Taking Ls posted multiple tweets related to the crash that earned high engagement.
