About

CapCut Templates refers to videos made with the video editing app CapCut, a subsidiary of the Chinese company ByteDance, which also owns TikTok. The app has integrated functionality with TikTok, with several video editing templates hosted on CapCut aiding the spread of TikTok trends that utilize the template function. Popular CapCut templates include one featuring Beatlejuice Saying Just Hanging Around, another featuring Tim Robinson and one featuring John Cena Wearing Headphones.

History

The video editing app CapCut[4] was originally an app called JianYing, which was widely popular amongst China-based users. JianYing was rebranded by ByteDance and launched globally as CapCut in April 2020.[1] By March 29th, 2023, the app had gathered over 200 million monthly active users and was downloaded more than TikTok in March 2023. [2] CapCut was also the second-most downloaded app in the U.S. in March 2023, behind Chinese discount retailer Temu. [3] The app is available on the Google Play Store[5] and on the Apple App Store.[6]

Notable CapCut Templates

Tim Robinson Asking "Are You Sure About That?"

Tim Robinson Asking Are You Sure About That? refers to a clip from the Netflix sketch comedy series I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson in which Robinson incredulously asks the camera the title question. The clip became popularized on TikTok via memes, where it was used in videos humorously depicting doubt.

John Cena Dancing with Headphones

John Cena Dancing with Headphones refers to an exploitable greenscreen template showing John Cena with headphones on, dancing in his chair while wearing a pink, salmon-colored suit. The original video was from a John Cena interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2017. In early 2023, the moment of Cena dancing became a CapCut template on TikTok where it earned various meme iterations in which Cena's goofy, joyous mood was paired with captions. The main TikTok sound was the song "Cupid" by Fifty Fifty.

Beetlejuice "What Are You Doing?" Just Hanging Around

Beetlejuice "What Are You Doing?" Just Hanging Around refers to an exploitable template featuring ex-boxer and Howard Stern collaborator Beetlejuice, also known as Beetlepimp, Beetle or Beet, getting asked, "What are you doing?" to which he replies, "Nothing… Me? Just hanging around." The original video shows Beetlejuice in a hotel room talking about why he went off the grid and it was posted to Instagram in late 2021 by his manager Robert Rooney (@bobbyrooney175). In early 2023, the video became a greenscreen template in video memes on TikTok, many of which used a CapCut template. The video was used to portray humorous ignorance about being caught in a given scenario.

2019-2020-2021-2022 CapCut Template

The 2019 2020 2021 2022 CapCut Template shows a computer cursor clicking on the years "2019," "2020," "2021" and "2022" with a different video appearing for each year. The trend is meant to show time passing throughout the years, however, most TikTokers used the template to make memes by adding moldy Family Guy or SpongeBob clips and other viral videos for each year. The template is actually called "Year | Use nyo na" and it was created by CapCut user @Collenes in October 2022. Also, the trend uses the song "Pipelinefunk" by Armin Küpper.
