About

BotTheFlag is a Twitter bot that counts the total number of different flags which appear in the usernames of people who liked a certain tweet. Launched in April 2022 and originally popularized among French-speaking users, in October 2022, an English version of the bot went viral on Twitter.

History

On April 23rd, 2022, French developer @Alexis12427278 launched @BotTheFlag, a Twitter^[1] bot able to count and display flag emojis in the names of users who liked a certain tweet. The bot originally could be summoned by tagging it and writing "analyse ce tweet." On May 24th, 2022, the bot posted its first viral tweet,^[2] a reply to a hornypost that gained over 340 retweets and 1,600 likes in five months (shown below).

Prior to October 2022, the bot worked exclusively with requests in French, with several tweets posted during that period going viral.^[3] For example, on August 11th, 2022, the bot analyzed a tweet^[4] by user @alfred_dessert, with the post garnering over 50 retweets and 860 likes in two months.

On October 15th, 2022, the bot tweeted^[5] its first notable analysis of a tweet written in English (shown below, left). On October 16th, Twitter^[6] user @PepperoniDave posted a screenshot of a @BotTheFlag analysis they requested^[7] for another tweet, writing, "This bot is my new best friend." The tweet gained over 4,200 retweets and 57,900 likes in two days (shown below, right).

Features

BotTheFlag bot is able to count the number of flag emojis in the names of Twitter users who liked a certain tweet. The bot can be summoned by replying "analyze this tweet" and "analyze that" to the requested tweet.

Traffic

As of October 18th, 2022, six months after its launch, the bot accumulated over 30,400 followers on Twitter.
