About
Auto-GPT or AutoGPT is a self-prompting artificial intelligence application developed by Significant Gravitas and based on OpenAI's GPT. The AI is an attempt at creating an autonomous system able to create "agents" to perform various specialized tasks in order to achieve a larger objective, all with minimum human input. Auto-GPT became a viral subject of discussions on social media in April 2023, some of which surrounded the autonomous GPT known as ChaosGPT that was assigned the task of destroying humanity.
History
On March 16th, 2023, developer Toran Bruce Richards, better known by his Twitter handle Significant Gravitas (@SigGravitas), released the first version of his self-prompting AI application Auto-GPT, initially named EnterpreneurGPT.[1][2] The initial goal of the project was to give GPT-4 autonomy to see if it could thrive in business and test its capability at making real-world decisions.
The development remained mostly unnoticed until late March 2023, with @SigGravitas reporting on his progress on Twitter. On March 30th, 2023, @SigGravitas tweeted[3] about the latest demo of Auto-GPT. The demonstration (shown below) gained over 10,600 views in two weeks.

On April 2nd, 2023, computer scientist Andrej Karpathy quote tweeted[4] one of Significant Gravitas' tweets, writing that the next frontier of prompt engineering was so-called AutoGPTs. The tweet (shown below) gained over 880 retweets and 4,700 likes in 10 days, prompting a surge in interest toward Auto-GPT.
Next frontier of prompt engineering imo: "AutoGPTs" . 1 GPT call is just like 1 instruction on a computer. They can be strung together into programs. Use prompt to define I/O device and tool specs, define the cognitive loop, page data in and out of context window, .run(). https://t.co/EKy84pa5bB
— Andrej Karpathy (@karpathy) April 2, 2023
The tweet was followed by major interest in the AI system on social media, with multiple tweets about Auto-GPT, its developments and capabilities going viral on Twitter in early April 2023.
Features
Auto-GPT is an experimental self-prompting AI system that strings together multiple instances of OpenAI's language model GPT. This means that the system is able to create so-called "agents" (instances of GPT), tasked with specialized tasks, all with the purpose of accomplishing a larger complex goal, such as writing a blog, with minimal human input.
Highlights
On April 3rd, 2023, Auto-GPT became the top trending repository on GitHub globally.[5]
On April 4th, Motherboard[6] published an article about Auto-GPT, writing that it "transforms a large language model from what is essentially an advanced auto-complete, into an independent agent capable of carrying out actions and learning from its mistakes."
On April 12th, 2023, Auto-GPT then trended on Twitter[7] with over 6,600 tweets.
Traffic
As of April 12th, 2023, Auto-GPT had over 33,000 stars on GitHub, with the popularity of the project steadily increasing since April 2nd.[8]
