About

Apple Intelligence is an artificial intelligence model announced by Apple that will be integrated into Apple products such as the iPhone and Macs providing a range of AI-generation technology. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced it at the 2024 Worldwide Developer Conference in June 2024, suggesting the system will learn from how users use Apple products to assist them with tasks such as communication. It will also unveil AI-generated emoji, called "Genmoji," allowing users to type prompts to create unique emoji.

History

On June 10th, 2024, Apple unveiled its plans for "Apple Intelligence"^[1] at the 2024 WWDC (Worldwide Developer Conference) with a video presented by the company's CEO Tim Cook (shown below). The beta version of Apple Intelligence will be released on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 chips and later. It will roll out later in 2024.

Tim Cook stressed that security and privacy will be priorities for Apple Intelligence. The company says it can maintain privacy using "private cloud compute," drawing on servers running on Apple chips and without letting Apple or others store the data.^[2] They also advertised an "image playground" that will let users create images with AI as well as generate unique emojis using prompts. ChatGPT will be integrated into the system so that users of Apple products can use the service without a ChatGPT subscription.

Online Presence

The announcement was met with enthusiasm and trepidation from tech enthusiasts online. On the enthusiastic side, Twitter / X user @kelseyhightower^[3] voiced on June 10th, 2024, that they were tempted to return to Apple's native apps like Mail and Calendar in the wake of the announcement, gaining over 40 retweets and 220 likes in a matter of hours (shown below, top).

Also on June 10th, X user SnazzyLabs^[4] noted that the promises of Apple Intelligence sounded similar to other models like Rabbit and Humane, but suggested optimism that Apple's version would work properly, gaining over 60 retweets and 1,700 likes in less than a day (shown below, bottom).

On the negative side, Twitter / X user @netcapgirl^[5] posted a joke on June 10th, 2024, about Steve Jobs being disappointed in the announcement, gaining over 500 retweets and 8,000 likes in a matter of hours (shown below, top).

The same day, user @AutismCapital^[6] voiced trepidation that AI would essentially send all of a user's habits to Apple, gaining over 140 retweets and 1,000 likes (shown below, bottom).

Genmoji

Genmoji refers to a feature in iOS18 that uses generative AI to produce custom emojis based on a user's text input.
