A Group Where We All Pretend to Be Ants in an Ant Colony is a novelty Facebook group members of which roleplay as ants in an ant colony, with posts relating to everyday obstacles ants face and "antifying" memes and popular culture phenomena. Created in June 2019, the group reached significant mainstream attention in April 2020 following a viral tweet.

Origin

On June 26th, 2019, Facebook[1] group "A group where we all pretent to be ants in an ant colony" was created. Members of the group made posts roleplaying as ants within a colony, referring to themselves as ants with a designated number (such as Ant #2031, Ant #45831 etc.), reporting about various occurrences within the colony and outside of it, interactions with humans and other ants and their other experiences with the world (example posts shown below).

Spread

In April 2020, the group reached significant mainstream attention, with a number of media reporting about the community. For example, on April 10th, 2020, The Verge[2] reported about the group. On April 14th, 2020, Twitter[3] user @agasramirez tweeted about the group, with the tweet receiving over 137,500 retweets and 532,000 likes within one week (shown below).

The mainstream attention towards the group resulted in its explosive growth, with the group growing from 145,000 to over 770,000 members within six days between April 14th and April 20th, 2020.
