Silence, Bank Account and Be Quiet, Bank Balance refer to a series of memes captioned with a command to one's bank account to keep quiet as one is going to splurge on a desired item or service. Originally a subformat of Silence X, a Y Is Talking memes, the caption and its versions have also appeared in other memes and have been used independently.

Origin

On June 19th, 2024, Tumblr^[1] user guerrillatech posted a version of the Silence X, a Y Is Talking meme featuring Kingdom of Heaven character Baldwin IV raising his hand captioned, "Silence, bank balance, little treat is talking." The post (shown below) garnered over 19,000 reblogs and 22,000 likes on the platform in two months.

On June 21st, 2024, X^[2] / Twitter account @OrwellNGoode reposted the image, with the post gaining over 8.5 million views, 33,000 reposts and 280,000 likes in two months.

Spread

In late June 2024, memes using the captions "Silence, bank balance" and "Be quiet, bank account" achieved viral spread on X / Twitter and Reddit. For example, on June 22nd, 2024, X^[3] user @IzayoiBlake posted a version of a reaction image featuring Son Goku
captioned, "Be quiet bank account, [Izayoi Fumo] is talking." The post (shown below) received over 240 reposts and 2,500 likes in two months.

On June 26th, 2024, X user @cxrnerrstone posted a version captioned, "Silence, bank balance, gift giving as a love language is talking," which received over 26,000 reposts and 174,000 likes in two months (shown below).

Both versions of the image caption format saw further use in July and August 2024, with the phrasal template also being used independently in other memes.
