Shut Up, Carol is a catchphrase used in hypothetical dialogue jokes on Twitter that imagine a character named Carol who offers pedantic advice and platitudes, to which the poster aggressively rejects the advice by saying "Shut up, Carol."
Origin
The character "Carol" first came into popular Twitter lexicon following a tweet by @elklien[1] that read "old people coming for me like "you're too young to be tired" well OK Carol, you're too old to still be alive yet here we are." The tweet gained over 18,000 retweets and 19,000 likes (shown below).
Spread
As the tweet spread, the "Carol" character began appearing in more jokes in which she offered various platitudinal advice to the poster's dismay. On November 8th, 2016, @BellaAshlynn[2] tweeted "Why do people in the workout videos ask you questions like you gonna hear me answer through the computer screen like shut up carol," gaining 12 retweets and over 100 likes (shown below, left). Another tweet by @emily_cox25[3] read "I hate cashiers that comment on what you buy. Like "ooh lettuce someone eats healthy". Shut up carol just scan it." (shown below, right). On August 22nd, 2017, Buzzfeed[4] compiled over two dozen "Shut up, Carol" tweets.
