About

Shreksophone, also spelled Shrekophone, refers to a viral Source Filmmaker animated video of the character Shrek playing a saxophone and dancing. Featuring Garry's Mod-like and deliberately "janky" animation of the character, the video inspired multiple remixes and extended versions on YouTube as it spread in the late 2010s and 2020s.

Origin

On May 18th, 2014, YouTube[2] user an0nymooose uploaded a Source Filmmaker animation titled "[SFM] Shrekophone." The video (seen below) shows the character Shrek of the eponymous franchise playing saxophone on a Team Fortress 2 map while a horse, likely meant to represent the character Donkey, assists him on a synthesizer. The video, set to the MÖWE Remix of "Zonnestraal" by De Hofnar,[1] garnered over 12 million views in 10 years.

Spread

Starting in 2018, the video has inspired extended versions, remixes and other content. On September 1st, 2018, YouTube[3] user FicLord posted a one-hour extended version of the video that garnered over 45 million views in six years (shown below).

On June 19th, 2021, YouTube[4] user Levimaites Productions posted a video titled "An army of Shrek dancing to Shrekophone [HD]," which garnered over 4.1 million views in three years (shown below).

Several extended versions, remakes and remixes of the meme posted in the late 2010s and early 2020s garnered a significant number of views on YouTube.
