About
The Shrek Is Love Filter, also known as Shrek Kissing Filter, is a filter on TikTok in which an augmented reality version of the character Shrek appears to latch on to one's lips for a passionate kiss. The filter inspired jokes and skit videos in which people pretend to be passionately kissing the green ogre in November 2023.
Origin
On November 17th, 2023, TikToker @ryleevigor2[1] created the "Shrek Kissing Filter." He shared a video (shown below, left) showcasing a 3D version of Shrek[2] with his hands on the man's neck while trying to kiss him. The video amassed over 23,000 plays and 222 likes in a week.
The user had previously created the "Shrek is Love"[3] filter in April 2023, which has Shrek standing by your side as if he is a close friend. He posted a video on April 27th, 2023, showing celebrities that used the Instagram/TikTok filter (shown below, right), amassing more than 533,000 plays and 6,900 likes in eight months.
Spread
In November 2023, the Shrek kissing filter started to be used en masse by TikTokers. For example, on November 20th, 2023, TIkToker[4] @tonystatovci shared a video pretending that Shrek was trying to kiss him and his girlfriend at the same time (shown below, left). The video is paired with Shrek's "Fairytale" movie soundtrack, amassing over 10 million plays and 1.2 million likes in three days. On the same day, TikToker[5] @tiopedrosola posted a video of him being forcedly kissed by Shrek (shown below, right), which garnered more than 77 million plays and 6.5 million likes in three days.
