Origin

One of the earliest posts to mention shredded cheese from the bag was posted to Reddit's /r/AdviceAnimals[1] on May 7th, 2014, using Everyone Loses Their Minds and gaining 2,300 points (shown below).

Spread

While "shredded cheese" appeared in some other advice animals in the following years, it started seeing the most use when it was applied to Object Labeling memes. On May 8th, 2017, a Sniper Elite Headshot post featuring shredded cheese was posted by Instagram user rad_shiba,[2] gaining over 100 likes (shown below, left). On August 21st, 2017, a Distracted Boyfriend meme with "shredded cheese" was posted to /r/memeeconomy.[3]

The phrase grew particularly popular in Fantasy Painting Object Labeling (FPOL) image macros. One of the earliest known FPOL posts, posted December 27th, 2017 by Tumblr user sierraseybold, labeled the giant skeleton in the painting "Nightcrawler" by Boris Groh as "me at 3 am" and the person in the painting "shredded cheese from the bag." The post gained over 105,000 notes (shown below).

Over the following months, "shredded cheese from the bag" would become a common phrase in FPOL memes. An example posted to /r/dankmemes on January 12th, 2018 gained over 70 points (shown below, left). Another post to Imgur used a screenshot from the Disney film Fantasia (shown below, right).
