Shot On iPhone refers to a series of parody videos based on the Apple iPhone ad campaign "Shot on iPhone" in which the company showcased stunning amateur videos taken with their product. The parodies which began in 2015 and resurfaced on TikTok in 2019, featured comedic, problematic, disastrous or chaotic videos with the "Shot on iPhone" frame placed at the end.
Origin
In June 2015, Apple expanded its "Shot On iPhone" campaign to include high definition amateur shot videos which were uploaded to Apple's image gallery.[1] The advertisements typical featured a short video that ends with a credit to the iPhone owner (shown below, left). On Jun 7, 2015, YouTuber Kyle ray uploaded a parody in which he includes the "Shot by iPhone" frame at the end of the 2015 Texas Pool Party Incident Video (shown below, right).
Spread
On July 20th, 2015, Bustle uploaded "Honest Shot on iPhone 6 Commercials [LABS]" to Youtube (shown below, left). The video gained over 608,600 views in four years. Youtubers continued to create parodies over the next few years. For example, FL uploaded "Shot on iPhone 6 Commercial (Parody)" on June 21st, 2016 (shown below, right).
On July 25th, 2016, YouTuber Expert Gruppo Pistone reposted the original commercial "Shot on iPhone by Linda H." on YouTube (shown below). The video became a template for TikTok videos which emerged three years later.
On December 23rd, 2019, TikToker @txmmysmxth uploaded a parody which gained over two million likes in three weeks (shown below, left). Over the next month, TikTokers like @wbohl and @shlong.dong garnered over 1.5 million and 2.7 million likes respectively in a few weeks (shown below, right).
