Shiba Inu Dancing, also known as Shiba Inu Head Bobbing and Dog Nodding Head, refers to a CapCut template and exploitable meme popularized on TikTok and Instagram in January 2024 in which a Shiba Inu dog nods its head rhythmically to backing music (often the Epic Sax Guy song "Run Away" by SunStroke Project and Olia Tira), similar to the CatJam format. In the early weeks of the meme's growing popularity, it was particularly popular among Spanish-speaking users.
Origin
On December 31st, 2023, TikTok user @always_winnie, a dog-focused account for a Shiba Inu named Winnie, posted a video[1] in which Winnie appears to bob its head to the Epic Sax Guy music, alternating between sides of the screen through the 12-second clip. It gained over 4.6 million views in one month (shown below).
Spread
The video began transforming into a meme roughly two weeks later when the dog began appearing to bob its head to other songs in various videos. On January 15th, 2024, a green-screen template for the meme was posted by TikToker @piratagreenscreen, gaining over 1.6 million views in two weeks (shown below). The template has been used over 340,000 times as of January 29th, 2024.[2]
On January 19th, user barbas_250918 posted a meme with the template that gained over 1.1 million views in 10 days (shown below, left). On January 20th, user forylars uploaded a Spanish language meme with the template, gaining over 700,000 views in nine days (shown below, right).
Toward the end of January 2024, the meme then spread to the English-speaking web, particularly via Instagram Reels. For example, on January 20th, Instagram[3] user @fourtwenty posted a meme using the head-nodding Shiba with a caption overlaid, receiving over 6.4 million views and 430,000 likes in one week (seen below).
On January 22nd, 2024, Instagram[4] user @weldingrig posted another version making a joke about slacking off at work, garnering over 1.7 million views and 72,000 likes in one week (shown below).
