About

She's Mid / Did He Seriously Call Me Mid refers to a series of memes centered around the concept of calling women mid, which is a slang term for mediocre. Spawned by a Sigma Male meme Twitter account and assisted by a viral tweet from influencer Anuhea Nihipali, the format achieved virality on Twitter in late April 2022.

Origin

On March 26th, 2022, Twitter[1] user @marcvs_fr posted a Whisper image macro in which a frame from the elevator scene from Drive was captioned, "she's mid but I like her." The post gained over 2,300 retweets and 28,100 likes in one month (shown below).

Spread

In late March and April 2022, the macro received viral spread online through reposts on Twitter[2] and Instagram.[3]

Through April 2022, @markvs_fr posted multiple Sigma Male / Literally Me Guys memes exploring the concept of calling women "mid." For example, on April 14th, 2022, @markvs_fr tweeted[4] a Drive meme that received over 20 retweets and 230 likes in two weeks (shown below, left).

On April 21st, 2022, Twitter[5] user @hottrashbabe posted an I Believe in Supremacy meme featuring a photograph of influencer Anuhea Nihipali (@AnuheaNihipali), captioned, "I believe in mid girls with huge goddamn fucking titties supremacy." The post gained over 1,400 retweets and 20,000 likes in seven days (shown below, left). On April 22nd, 2022, Anuhea Nihipali tweeted[6] a screenshot of the post, commenting, "ah yes, this is so nice" (shown below, center). In the same thread, Nihipali posted[7] their selfie, writing, "did he seriously just say mid lmao." The tweet gained over 560 quote tweets and 5,900 likes in six days.

On April 25th, 2022, Twitter[8] user @ipadbabygf posted a screenshot of Nihipali's tweet, writing, "Beware the ego of a gassed up 6." The tweet gained over 460 retweets and 10,900 likes in three days (shown below, left). Later on the same day, Twitter[9] user @8EyedEel quote tweeted Nihipali's selfie, writing, "Internet convinced average women they're supermodels" (shown below, right). The post received 70 retweets and 1,700 likes in three days.

On April 25th, multiple Twitter users quote tweeted the posts or shared screenshots of them, criticizing @ipadbabygf and @8EyedEel. For example, a post by Twitter[10] user @jarvis received over 400 retweets and 13,200 likes in three days (shown below, left). A tweet[11] by @moschinodorito received over 2,700 and 73,900 likes (shown below, center). The controversy inspired more memes exploring the concept of calling people mid.
