About

She's A 10 But … or He's A 10 But …, also known as The Rating Game, is a social game on TikTok where a group of people films themselves presenting scenarios to each other using variations of the phrase, "she's/he's a 10 but," sometimes starting with a lower number than 10, followed by a description of a negative trait that the fictitious person exhibits that might lower their score. The players then give the fictional person a new score based on the trait. The game began on TikTok in late May 2022 and spread to Twitter in June as a phrasal template meme trend where commenters give new ratings for the person in the presented scenario.

Origin

On May 31st, 2022, TikToker[1] @leahhwoodss posted a video where she and her friends play a game in the car. Leah presents the scenario, "He's a six but he drives a nice truck, what does that make him?" One player says "an eight" and another says "a 7 and a half." She then passes the camera to the next player, who offers another scenario. The video gained over 1.4 million views in three weeks (shown below).

Leah then posted a second part to TikTok[2] on June 2nd (shown below, left) that gained over 1.2 million views in just under three weeks. She posted a third part to TikTok[3] on June 3rd, gaining over 2.8 million views in a similar span of time (shown below, right).

Spread

The game spread across TikTok over the course of June 2022. For example, on June 7th, TikToker[4] @dakotamortensen posted a video playing the game with a friend, gaining over 875,000 views in two weeks (shown below, left). On June 11th, TikToker[11] @leahhwoodss, who started the trend, posted a video to TikTok giving the backstory behind the game. On June 14th, TikToker[5] @kitkeenan posted a video playing the game, gaining over 150,000 views in a week (shown below, right).

The trend also became popularized on Twitter that month, inspiring several viral tweets starting on June 18th. For example, on that day, Twitter[6] user @girImuse posted, "she’s a 10 but she cries when she’s mad," gaining over 111,000 likes. On the same day, Twitter[7] user @alyciacruz_ posted, "she’s a 10 but she bites the skin off her lips when she’s anxious," gaining over 137,000 likes and 16,700 retweets in three days (shown below).

On June 19th, TikToker[8] @sophadophaa posted a video playing the game, gaining over 618,000 views in two days (shown below). On June 20th, Mashable[9] published an article about the social media game titled, "Men are ruining the 'She's a 10' meme" where they posit that men are using the game to make sexist jokes. On the same day, Twitter[10] user @faizaan_v posted, "She’s a 10 but she asks you if you’d still love her if she was a worm," referencing the If I Was A Worm meme, gaining over 96,000 likes and 10,000 retweets in less than 24 hours.
