Sherma is a non-player character (NPC) from the 2025 Metroidvania video game Hollow Knight: Silksong, described as an "optimistic pilgrim on a spiritual journey." Sherma was first seen in the February 2019 announcement trailer for Silksong and is seen in the game playing an instrument and singing a song in front of locked doors. After the game's release in early September 2025, Sherma became a fan-favorite character, inspiring fan art and memes on social media.

Origin

On February 14th, 2019, the Nintendo of America YouTube^[1] channel posted the reveal trailer for Hollow Knight: Silksong, which would not release until September 2025. At the 1:05 timestamp, an NPC named Sherma is shown playing an instrument in front of a locked door. This is the first time Sherma was shown by Team Cherry.

Two years later, Team Cherry made a post on their website^[2] offering more information on some of the game's characters, including Sherma, writing, "An optimistic pilgrim on a spiritual journey. Sherma’s path may often cross with Hornet’s own, but his lack of combat and acrobatic prowess can land him in desperate need of aid."

Sherma became increasingly popular leading up to the game's release in September 2025. For example, on September 2nd, 2025, X^[3] user @Shkarpett posted Sherma fan art, garnering over 3,800 likes in six days. The game was released on September 4th.

Memes, fan art and content about Sherma started going viral following the game's release on September 4th, 2025, continuing over the following days.

On September 5th, 2025, X^[4] user @GenePark posted a screenshot from the game, writing, "sherma is the best. I will protecc her," garnering over 28,000 likes in three days. Notably, Sherma is a male, not a female.

That same day, X^[5] user @Itzsamaz posted an edit where the lyrics to Sherma's song are placed next to a clip of Sherma performing his song, garnering over 64,000 likes in three days.

Later on September 5th, the video of Sherma playing his song was posted to TikTok,^[6] garnering over 2 million views in three days.

On September 6th, 2025, X^[7] user @Punkzard posted a redraw of the Madison Beer BeReal meme replacing Madison Beer with Sherma, garnering over 82,000 likes in two days.

That same day, the Video Game News YouTube^[8] channel uploaded a 10-hour video of Sherma singing his song, garnering over 14,000 views in two days.

On September 7th, 2025, X^[9] user @Pirat_Nation posted an isolated, zoomed-in clip of Sherma performing his song, garnering over 47,000 likes in a day.

The clip was reposted to the /r/Silksong^[10] subreddit later that day, garnering over 500 upvotes in the same span of time.
