Shakira’s Statue refers to a bronze statue of the Colombian singer Shakira created and placed in her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia. The statue became the subject of memes, was Photoshopped in various situations and was jokingly compared to her ex-husband Gerard Piqué.
Origin
On December 26th, 2023, the Colombian singer Shakira shared a Carousel post on Instagram[1] revealing a bronze statue depiction of herself was created and placed in her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia. Artist Yino Márques created the statue inspired by the singer's memorable "Hips Don't Lie" dance move from her 2005 music video. Shakira’s post (shown below) amassed over 3.4 million likes and 34,000 comments in a day.
Spread
Shortly after the singer revealed the statue, the internet was flooded with comments and jokes about the bronze figure. For instance, on December 26th, 2023, X[2] user @myronxavr shared a clip of Wendy Williams fainting paired with the caption “The Statue of Liberty falling into the Atlantic after seeing the Statue of Shakira.” The post (shown below) received roughly 18,000 views and 1,200 likes in a day.
On the same say, X[3] user @gracesftdt Photoshopped Shakira’s statue to be larger than other prominent landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Dubai’s tallest building. The post (shown below) received more than 6,300 likes and 542 retweets in a day.
