Shaggy Rogers is a character from Scooby-Doo animated franchise. A cowardly, yet gluttonous, slacker introduced in the first episode of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! series as one of the main characters, Shaggy has since appeared in numerous animated installations of the franchise, as well as its live-action adaptations.

Origin

On September 13th, 1969, the first episode "What a Night for a Knight"[1] of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! animated series premiered on CBS. The episode introduced five main characters of the show, known as "the gang", including Shaggy Rogers. Since the first episode, Shaggy was presented as a coward and a slacker experiencing a near-constant state of hunger, and the best friend of Scooby-Doo.

One of the main characters of the franchise, since 1969 Shaggy Rogers has appeared in the majority of its installations, including What's New, Scooby-Doo?[2] and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated[3] animated series and 2000[4] and 2004[5] live action movies, in which he was portrayed by actor Matthew Lillard.


Shaggy, This Isn't Weed

Shaggy, This Isn't Weed refers to a series of photoshopped images of the character Fred Jones from the Scooby Doo: Where Are You? animated series with another, distorted face edited onto his own. The earliest known example of the image was posted on November 16th, 2015 by Redditor[6] thiscontradiction.

Ultra Instinct Shaggy

Ultra Instinct Shaggy is a series of memes spawned by a video remix of Shaggy undergoing the "ultra instinct" transformation of Goku from Dragon Ball Super. The meme originates from a YouTube[7] video titled "Ultra Instinct Shaggy" posted by YouTuber Midya on October 12th, 2017.

January 2019 Resurgence

In January 2019, memes featuring Shaggy saw a spike in use on Reddit. Although initial posts stemmed from Ultra Instinct Shaggy memes, later examples branched away into an independent direction.

On November 2nd, 2018, Redditor[8] narwhal-lord14 posted a captioned image of Shaggy with a photoshopped katana to /r/Bossfight subreddit. The post gained 3,100 upvotes in three months. On January 5th, 2019, an anonymous 4chan[9] user posted a greentext story based on Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme to /b/ board. On January 6th, Redditor[10] matthewoliveira posted the screenshot of the thread to /r/greentext subreddit. The post gained over 2,000 upvotes in two days.

On January 13th, 2019, Redditor[11] roaringdoom made a post to /r/ShitPostCrusaders subreddit in which Shaggy was portrayed as a character from JoJo's Bizzare Adventure anime. On the same day, Redditor[12] DarkHorse786 posted an edited Superman comic panel in which the superhero begged Shaggy for mercy to /r/dankmemes subreddit. The posts gained over 4,000 and 2,100 upvotes in five days, respectively.

On January 16th, Twitter[13] user @GnarlyBuster posted a Sasuke Choke Edit referring to the Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme. The post received over 5,100 retweets and 13,535 likes in two days. On the same day, Redditor[14] ItsZekrom posted a screenshot of the tweet to /r/dankmemes subreddit, where it gained over 39,200 upvotes in the same period.

In the next days, more posts using various images of Shaggy were posted across a number of subreddits, including /r/dankmemes[15], /r/thanosdidnothingwrong[16] and /r/pewdiepiesubmissions[17]. On January 18th, 2019, Redditor[18] OakyTheAcorn posted on of numerous Shaggy memes that they created. The post received more than 60,000 points (93% upvoted) and 340 points (shown below).
