Sephiroth Impaling Mario is a notable scene taken from the reveal trailer for Final Fantasy VII villain Sephiroth as the next DLC fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Following the premiere of the trailer at the 2020 Game Awards, the moment in which Sephiroth appears to stab Mario was used as an object labeling meme template.

Origin

On December 10th, 2020, at the 2020 Game Awards, a trailer revealing Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII as an upcoming playable DLC fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate premiered (shown below). In the trailer, he is shown to seemingly impale Mario with his sword, only to reveal the sword caught onto Mario's overalls.

The moment in the trailer was quickly the subject of jokes due to the graphic implication of Sephiroth stabbing Mario. Twitter user @ammnontet[1] joked, "this is the single greatest image ever created by man," gaining over 4,000 retweets and 26,000 likes (shown below, left). User @StormYorha[2] joked, "SEPHIROTH FUCKING MURDERS MARIO," gaining over 4,000 retweets and 25,000 likes (shown below, right).



Others used the moment in object labeling memes. For example, Twitter user @MegaVGMaster[3] posted a series of object labeling memes, gaining over 120 retweets and 920 likes (example shown below, left).
