Senior College Student (a.k.a Senior Freshman) is an advice animal image macro series featuring an elderly woman deeply engaged in a college lecture. The overlaid text generally describes something that could happen in a classroom environment, which is immediately followed by a punchline jabbing at various stereotypes of senior citizens or grandparents.

Origin

The elderly woman depicted in the original photograph is Nola Ochs, a 99 year old Kansas resident who graduated from Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in 2007 and broke the Guinness World Record for world's oldest college graduate at age of 95. Her record-setting graduation was covered by the U.S. news media, including MSNBC[1].

The first known instance of "Senior College Student" surfaced on July 31st, 2011 on the image macro application site Quickmeme[2]. Coinciding with the emergence of College Freshman series, most instances of Senior Freshman are centered around the premise of an older lady in a classroom who is eager to learn and share her personal experiences of the past.

Spread

The meme swiftly took off on QuickMeme as well as MemeGenerator[3] and MemeBase[4], spawning hundreds of variations. Some of the notable instances were also picked up by internet culture blogs like Pleated Jeans[5], FunnyJunk[6] and 9GAG[7], as well as IGN forum[8], Reddit[9] and Tumblr[10].
