About

Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift Gossiping At Golden Globes, also known as Selena Gomez Whispering To Taylor Swift, refers to a video and meme format showing the two pop stars discussing something at the 81st Golden Globes ceremony in early January 2024, which elicited a shocked reaction from Swift. The clip rapidly spread on X and other social media platforms, leading to speculation and memes about what the two celebrities may have been discussing.

Origin

The 81st Golden Globes, celebrating the best in American film and television productions in 2023, premiered at 8 p.m. EST on January 7th, 2024. At one point during the ceremony, a shot showed Selena Gomez leaning in to whisper something to Taylor Swift, presumably within earshot of actress Keleigh Sperry as well. Then, Swift looks shocked, and Gomez nods her head.

Many have since speculated as to what the conversation was about as the moment spread online, and one of the first clips of the exchange appeared online on January 7th, 2024, very shortly after the recorded interaction had taken place. The video, posted by X[1] user @therastour13 that night, earned over 38,000 likes and 4,000 reposts in less than two days (seen below).

Spread

Soon after the Golden Globes aired on January 7th, 2024, a rumor started on X[2] by users such as @allurequinn, saying that Gomez was supposedly gossiping about Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet. The post by @allurequinn (seen below) speculates that she said, “I asked for a picture with him and she said no,” to which Keleigh Sperry responds, “With Timothée?” and Gomez nods. This attempted lip reading is unproven but remains one of the most common theories on the exchange, receiving 393,000 likes in the two days after it was posted on January 7th (seen below).

The following day, multiple news outlets then reported that Gomez denied this rumor, with a friend saying that “she never even saw or spoke to them,” according to Cosmopolitan.[3]

Soon, the use of the clip had shifted from discourse about the conversation itself to a meme format on its own, typically used as a reaction or source for GIF captions. For example, on January 7th, 2024, X[4] user @zoeyduatch posted a meme joking about Golden Globes host Jo Koy, which earned 30,000 likes in two days (seen below, left). On January 8th, X[5] user @TarHeelsofNYC used the clip to make a meme about a sports game, earning roughly 240 likes in a day (seen below, right).
