Scaramouche or The Wanderer is an antagonistic character from the video game Genshin Impact. He is the sixth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers and first appeared during the game's November 2020 "Unreconciled Stars" event. In October 2022, it was announced that Scaramouche would be redesigned and added to the game as a playable character, known as The Wanderer, in the game's 3.3 update. He is also known as Kunikuzushi or by his codename, Balladeer. Since his introduction, particularly as a playable character, Scaramouche has become a prominent subject of fan art and memes within the game's fandom.

Origin

Scaramouche was introduced to Genshin Impact during the November 2020 "Unreconciled Stars" event.^[1][2] He appears again in the chapter II quest "Delusion" and again in the Archon Quest "Dreams, Emptiness, Deception."^[3] On November 25th, 2020, his intro cutscene was uploaded to YouTube, garnering over 930,000 views in two years (shown below). In his first appearance, he seems friendly to the protagonists, later revealing himself to be an antagonist.

Spread

Scaramouche gained a considerable fanbase among Genshin players over the following years, inspiring fan art, memes and other content featuring him. On November 26th, 2020, a Redditor posted a meme featuring Scaramouche to /r/Genshin_Impact^[4] titled "Scaramouche is a manlet," garnering over 18,000 upvotes in two years (shown below, left). On December 22nd, Tumblr^[5] user kuri-s posted fan art of Scaramouche, garnering over 1,900 notes in two years (shown below, right).

On December 30th, YouTuber^[6] CrownieShorts posted a dub of a comic featuring Scaramouche in which characters sing "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen to him, garnering over 817,000 views in two years (shown below). This has become a running joke with Scaramouche because of the song's lyrics, "Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango."

Redesign / Playable Character Announcement

On October 31st, 2022, the Genshin Impact Twitter^[7] account announced that Scaramouche would be added as a playable character in the game's 3.3 update called The Wanderer. They also shared an image of him with a redesigned outfit, garnering over 276,000 likes in three days (shown below). Over the following days, fan art, memes and various content about the character increased significantly.

Footage and images of Scaramouche's gameplay then began leaking online in November 2022. On November 3rd, Twitter^[8] user @genshinmains posted numerous images and clips of The Wanderer, including a video that gained over 51,000 likes in under a day. On the same day, YouTuber Kokomimainee reborn posted a gameplay video, garnering over 20,000 views in under a day (shown below).

The leaks and character in general became notably popularized on TikTok where users created fancams and edits using them (examples shown below).
