Origin

The phrase is thought to have surfaced sometime in 2008 as an image macro, featuring Zach Roloff[1] from the 2005 American reality TV series Little People, Big World and the caption "Say that to my face fucker not online and see what happens". The earliest archived use of the image dates back to a thread on 4chan's /a/ (anime) board on June 27th, 2008[2].

Spread

In 2008, the original image macro was also used as a reaction image on sites like BodyBuilding.com[3], GrassCity.com[4], and IGN[5]. In the following years, the phrase itself became used to confront individuals in the comments sections of Reddit and 4chan, while several derivatives of the original image were created on sites like MemeGenerator[7] and QuickMeme[8]. In comments, the phrase is most of the time accompanied by a still reaction image of an angry or a determined face[9].

On October 27th, 2012, a Facebook group[10] named after the expression was launched. On January 27rd, 2013, a YouTube user Caska4 uploaded a video[6] of Zyzz saying "Say it to my face fucker and not online and see what happens". As of April 2014, the video had gotten over 10,000 views and 53 thumbs up.
