About
Saw Patrol refers to jokes surrounding the releases of Saw X and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, which are both set to release on September 29th, 2023. Due to the vastly different tones of the movies, some attempted to claim it would rival the Barbenheimer phenomenon and made memes connecting the two films. However, others felt the meme felt forced and was a naked viral marketing attempt.
Origin
On July 20th, 2023, the Twitter account @DiscussingFilm[3] pointed out that Saw X and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie were releasing on the same day, September 29th, 2023. This led several posters to compare it to the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon and use the phrase "Saw Patrol." The most viral of these tweets was made by user @AshleyLCarter1,[4] who quote-tweeted @DiscussingFilm that day with a joke about "Saw Patrol," gaining over 7,200 retweets and 58,000 likes in two weeks (shown below).
Spread
On July 25th, 2023, the TikTok account @TheDisturbingDissector[1] posted a video pointing out that Saw X and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie were releasing the same day, implying that it could be the next "Barbenheimer" phenomenon. The TikTok gained over 215,000 likes in roughly 10 days (shown below).
The observation that Saw X and the PAW Patrol movie were released on the same day led to some memes in the Barbenheimer vein in which people combined the imagery of the two franchises. For example, on July 29th, Redditor Landon1195 posted a poster for "Saw Patrol" to /r/moviescirclejerk.[2]
Though it only gained 20 points in one week there, it was reposted to Twitter by @PopCrave[5] on July 31st, where it gained over 900 retweets, 9,000 likes and 1,700 quote-tweets in five days (shown below, left). The same day, Twitter user @Ecto_fun[6] posted an image of a PAW Patrol character in a Saw trap, gaining over 4,200 retweets and 48,000 likes in the same timeframe (shown below, right).
However, some social media users responded negatively to the spread of "Saw Patrol" memes, feeling they were too forced. On July 31st, Twitter user @LegoKingo[7] said the "astroturfing" of Saw Patrol likely would not work because adults would likely not be interested in the PAW Patrol movie, gaining over 790 retweets and 8,000 likes in five days (shown below, left). The following day, user @cleofffilm[8] echoed the sentiment, saying "no respectable person would see a PAW Patrol movie for the meme," gaining over 2,700 retweets and 49,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).
