Origin

On September 18th, 2017, the University of Central Florida's YouTube[1] channel uploaded a 30-second video of an ADHD study in which the same student watched a math video and a clip from a Star Wars film. In the side-by-side timelapse video, the student fidgets and spins in his computer chair while watching the math video, and remains calm and focused while watching the Star Wars clip. The video accumulated over 10 million views in five years (shown below).

The video did not see use as a meme format until September 25th, 2022, when Imgur[2] user hasjoinedthechat uploaded a GIF based on the video to the site (shown below). The post received over 139,800 views and 230 comments in seven months.

Spread

Later on September 25th, 2021, iFunny[3] user star_wars_wtf_777 posted the GIF to the app, where it was featured and received over 78,700 likes in seven months. Also on the same day, an unknown 9GAG[4] user uploaded it, with the GIF accumulating over 17,000 upvotes.

On September 25th, iFunny[5] user Knight_Escanor posted the earliest edit of the video, setting it to the main theme of King of the Hill. The video (shown below) received over 940 smiles on the app in seven months.

On September 28th, 2022, Twitter[6] user @computerThot posted the earliest recaptioned version of the video which received over 8,500 retweets and 52,100 likes in seven months (authorship unconfirmed; shown below).

Starting in late September 2021, the video achieved virality as source material for memes, with users humorously recaptioning right or both sides of the video. For example, on October 3rd, 2022, iFunny[7] user lilWtf recaptioned the right side, "8 hour Yugoslav War documentary," with the post gaining over 17,000 smiles on the app in six months. On the same day, Redditor[8] loris45260 recaptioned the video, "Watching the Team Fortress 2 lore," with the post receiving over 16,000 upvotes in the /r/meme subreddit (shown below, right).

The meme format maintained its popularity through late 2021 and saw continued use in early 2022.
