On March 10th, 2011, the blog “Sad Etsy Boyfriends” was launched on Tumblr^[2] with several photographs of men wearing hand-knit beanie caps taken from Etsy product pages (shown below).

Spread

Throughout March, the Tumblr blog was featured on the Internet news site Urlesque,^[1] the women’s interest blog Jezebel^[4] and the pop culture blog The Frisky,^[7] as well as on Reddit's /r/TwoXChromosomes,^[3] where it gained over 220 up votes and 25 comments prior to being archived. In October 2013, more than two years after the initial coverage, Sad Etsy Boyfriends saw a major resurgence when the viral content site BuzzFeed^[5] highlighted several photos of “Sad Etsy Dogs” (shown below). Throughout that week in October, the blog was mentioned on the fashion blog Racked^[6] as the “Tumblr of the Day," followed by the Internet news sites Laughing Squid,^[8] The Daily Dot,^[9] and the news aggregation site Digg.^[10]
