On March 10th, 2011, the blog “Sad Etsy Boyfriends” was launched on Tumblr[2] with several photographs of men wearing hand-knit beanie caps taken from Etsy product pages (shown below).
Spread
Throughout March, the Tumblr blog was featured on the Internet news site Urlesque,[1] the women’s interest blog Jezebel[4] and the pop culture blog The Frisky,[7] as well as on Reddit's /r/TwoXChromosomes,[3] where it gained over 220 up votes and 25 comments prior to being archived. In October 2013, more than two years after the initial coverage, Sad Etsy Boyfriends saw a major resurgence when the viral content site BuzzFeed[5] highlighted several photos of “Sad Etsy Dogs” (shown below). Throughout that week in October, the blog was mentioned on the fashion blog Racked[6] as the “Tumblr of the Day," followed by the Internet news sites Laughing Squid,[8] The Daily Dot,[9] and the news aggregation site Digg.[10]
