Ryan Gosling's Colored Suits, also known as Ryan Gosling Color Palette, refers to a series of memes in which Ryan Gosling's outfits of various colors are paired with sets of objects that match these colors, such as beer cans, instant ramen, packs of cigarettes, etc. First gaining popularity on VK in 2018, the format achieved virality on TikTok in mid-2023.

Origin

On December 10th, 2018, VK^[1] page Райан Гослинг на каждый день (rus. "Ryan Gosling for Every Occasion") posted a four-panel meme in which Ryan Gosling wearing suits of four colors was matched with four cans of Baltika beer of matching colors. The post (shown below, left) received over 220 likes and five shares in six years. Later on December 10th, the page posted an updated version of the meme suggested^[2] by a user, with the post gaining over 370 likes and six shares on VK^[3] in six years (shown below, right).

Spread

In the following years, the VK page posted several other similar memes, pairing Ryan Gosling wearing different outfits with objects of the same color. For example, on January 24th, 2019, the page posted^[4] a meme pairing the actor with brightly colored packs of dumplings, with the post accumulating over 1,900 likes and 80 shares on VK in five years (shown below, left). On August 21st, 2020, VK^[5] page godnotent posted a collection of such memes that received over 3,400 likes and 90 shares in four years (one example shown below, right).

The meme achieved global recognition in May 2023 as it gained popularity on TikTok. On May 7th and 9th, 2023, TikTok^[6]^[7] user @fo_qova posted two memes that matched Ryan Gosling with cigarette brands, with the videos (slides shown below), set to a sped-up version of "Nightcall" from the Drive soundtrack, garnering over 549,000 views and 60,500 likes and 333,700 views and 48,400 likes in 10 months, respectively.

The format maintained popularity on TikTok through the summer of 2023. For example, on June 7th, 2023, TikTok^[8] user @walter.is.here posted a meme matching Gosling with Balkan flags which received over 262,000 views and 54,000 likes in nine months (example shown below, left). On July 5th, TikTok^[9] user @silver_req posted a Plants vs. Zombies version of the meme that garnered over 407,000 views and 91,000 likes in eight months (example shown below, right).
