About

Rush B is a slang term used to mock Russian and other Slavic players of the first-person shooter video game Counter-Strike. The term references a strategy used by novice players of the Counter-Strike multiplayer game, in which one team attempts to plant a bomb, and the other attempts to defuse it. Some have noticed that new players of the game tend to storm the bomb in an area of the level known as "Map B." The term grew in popularity following the game's release on Steam, where Russian players could access it, and the term strategy and phrase became associated with players from Slavic regions.

Origin

Counter-Strike launched on November 9th, 2000. Seven years later, on September 12th, 2007, Counter-Strike premiered on Steam, providing access to people throughout the world, including in Russia.[1]

The exact origin of the meme is unknown. However, the earliest known usage of the term comes from a YouTube video entitled "Counter Strike;Source rush B (GameArmy) Russian server," YouTuber didalone published on August 11th, 2010 (shown below).

Spread

The phrase is mostly used in online chat to mock players of Russian origin in online games. Often, when a player speaks Russian in an English-speaking server, it is common to reply with jokes like "rush B cyka" (cyka pronounced as "Sooka" the Russian word for "bitch") or they would say, "No, we don't rush B!"

On November 23rd, 2015, YouTuber HOUNGOUNGAGNE published a parody of the song "Under the Sea" from the Disney animated film The Little Mermaid, replacing lyrics of the original song with subject matter that mocks Russian players that rely on the strategy. The post received more than 2 million views in less than five years (shown below).

On May 16th, 2016, Urban Dictionary [2] user Beggar's Bazooka defined the term as "a strategy/tactic for noobs, russians players and sometimes desperate professionals in cs:go which they have to purchase P90 and rush to bombsite b in de_dust2." The post received more than 1,600 upvotes in less than five years (shown below).
