About
Rollslop or Roll Slop, a portmanteau of "roll" and "slop," is a derogatory slang term for games of the soulslike video game genre, such as Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series. Coined in March 2023 on 4chan, the term saw viral spread on social media in April 2025 following the announcement of the soulslike video The Duskbloods.
Origin
On March 2nd, 2023, an anonymous 4chan[1] user made the earliest discovered post using the slang word "rollslop," a portmanteau of "roll" and "slop," to refer to games of the Soulslike genre. The gameplay of the majority of Soulslike games heavily relies on dodging mechanics, such as rolling and quickstepping, while "slop" is a slang term used to describe low-quality content and products.
The 4chan post (shown below) appeared in a /v/ thread dedicated to the 2023 video game Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, which was also developed by FromSoftware.
The term achieved initial spread on the /v/ board of 4chan in March 2023. For example, on March 14th, an anonymous /v/[2] user commented, ">soulslike I call them rollslop nowadays…"
Later on March 14th, 2023, a 4chan user made the earliest found opening post that referred to Soulslike games as "rollslop" (shown below). The thread[3] garnered over 130 replies in two years.
Spread
The term saw further spread on 4chan in the following years. As of April 7th, 2025, over 7,900 search results for "rollslop" could be discovered on the /v/[4] board alone.
Popularization of the term outside of 4chan started on December 13th, 2024, when X[5] user @TheRuinbringer replied to a post glazing FromSoftware, the developer of multiple popular Soulslike games, commenting, "LMAO avarge brain-dead fromdrone rollslop fan." The post (shown below) gained over 22,000 views in five months and was spread further through screenshots.
On April 2nd, 2025, X[6] user @Soraismyson wrote that they saw somebody using the term on their timeline and found it funny. The post (shown below) gained over 3.5 million views, 4,000 reposts and 73,000 likes in five days.
Following the post, the slang term saw viral spread on X / Twitter in early April 2025.
