About
Rey Who? refers to a phrasal template in which people alter dialogue from the 2019 science fiction film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The meme, which began appearing following the film's release in December 2019, features people recreating the final line of dialogue in the film for humorous effect. The template reads:
Rey: I'm Rey
Woman: Rey who?
Rey: Rey [insert humorous name]
Origin
On December 17th, 2019, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released in the United States.[1] In the film's final piece of dialogue, a woman asks the character Rey (portrayed by Daisy Ridley) for her name. When she replies, "I'm Rey," the woman asks, "Rey who?" Rey answers, "Rey Skywalker." Following the film's release, people began parodying the line on Twitter.
The following day, Twitter user @dhafintyanoorca tweeted[2] a parody of the line online (shown below).
Spread
On December 22nd, Twitter[3] user @cevangelista413 tweeted a version in which Rey says that her name is "Rey Star Wars." The tweet received more than 184,000 likes and 26,000 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, left).
Following the post, people posted variations of the format by posting other character name reveals from different films (examples below).
