Throw It In Reverse or The Reverse Challenge refers to TikTok videos in which users implement the rewind feature on TikTok to create videos or reverse videos reminiscent of the zoom challenge to the song "Reverse" by Vic Mensa.
Origin
On June 7th, 2019, Vic Mensa released the song "Reverse" featuring G-Easy and produced by Marshmello (shown below). The song has accumulated over 1.2 million views and 52,000 likes in a year.
On April 30th, 2019, TikTok user blake.a.neslon used a clip of the song to perform the zoom challenge in reverse which gained over 101,000 likes and 2,800 shares in two weeks (shown below).
Precursor
Previous usage of the hashtag #reversechallenge were connected to video simply implementing the rewind feature. On March 30th, 2019, TikTok user @marianmundo uploaded a video of themself doing various things in reverse which two weeks later @Serrenkezia used the hashtag in a video of cheerleaders performing in reverse (shown below). The video garnered over 25,000 and 19,200 likes respectively.
Spread
On May 7th, 2019, TikTok user used the sound clip of "Reverse" to perform a backwards zoom challenge (shown below, left). The video gained over 4,600 likes and 60 shares in six days. On May 8th, TikTok user icarlywithagun used the sound clip in a video using rewind (shown below, center). The video garnered over 125,400 likes and 5,700 shares in five days. On May 10th, TikTok user @theskorys uploaded a similar video which gained over 97,000 likes in three days. Most of these videos use either the #reversechallenge or #throwitinreverse hashtag.
