About

Rethink Your Weekend refers to a health infographic that reminds its viewer to be mindful of their calorie intake when drinking beer and eating fried food over the weekend, instead urging them to eat salad and drink hard liquor. The absurd nature of the earnest infographic, originally posted to Instagram in mid-2021, inspired ironic remixes, turning the image macro into an exploitable.

Origin

On July 30th, 2021, the health and diet-based Instagram[1] account Liv Eazy posted a calorie-counting infographic to their page. The text in the image reads, "Rethink Your Weekend," and labels "Fried foods & beer" as having 1,500 calories while "Hard Liquor & salad" is only 700 calories. Over the course of six months, the post received roughly 3,100 likes (shown below).

Spread

The image was first shared to Tumblr on August 9th, 2021, by the Tumblr[2] blog neuroticpantomime. They captioned the image, "Diet culture is hilarious and rad actually," and received roughly 55,600 notes for the image over the course of five months.

A viral thread ensued from the Tumblr post, added onto by the blog lesbian-toddhoward, who noted that the mug used in the photographs was in fact a german mustard jar. A screenshot of the thread was posted to Reddit's /r/tumblr[3] on August 15th, 2021, by Redditor BarryItsMeInAWig. The post (shown below, click to expand) received roughly 5,000 upvotes over five months.

On January 21st, 2022, the image was posted to Twitter[4] by user tyler02020202, who captioned it, "I love this tbh," receiving roughly 153,300 likes over the course of 10 days (shown below).

The above repost caused the most amount of Rethink Your Weekend memes going forward. For instance, on the same day, Twitter[5] user kyledotmp3 covered over some of the text in the meme, making it read only "Hard Liquor" and "700 calories" on the template's right side. The meme (shown below, left) received roughly 3,800 likes, also over 10 days. On January 22nd, Instagram[6] page trashcanpaul posted a version that received roughly 88,000 likes in nine days (shown below, right).

Overall, most memes using the template surfaced on Instagram and Twitter going into the rest of January 2022. Meme creators continued to insert increasingly absurd meal options that countered beer and fried food.
