Resolution Comparisons are a series of image macros juxtaposing a depiction of a person or fictional character in a low resolution next to another image labelled with a high definition resolution.
Origin
On August 25th, 2016, Imgur[4] user SebastianRogojina uploaded a screenshot of the character Carl Johnson from the 2004 action-adventure video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, labelled as "144p", next to a photograph of actor Eddie Murphy labelled as "4k" (shown below).
Spread
On October 12th, 2016, the Jokes King Facebook[5] page posted a photograph of a bat labelled "240p" above a picture of "Batman": labelled "1080p" (shown below, left). Over the next five months, the post received upwards of 5,100 reactions and 480 shares. On November 3rd, the Gaming Memes Facebook[6] page posted a pixel art depictions of the characters Bill and Lance from the 1987 NES game Contra above a detailed illustration of the two characters (shown below, right).
On February 25th, 2017, Redditor Flurex posted side-by-side pictures of the character Spongebob Squarepants, labelling the left as "144p" and the right as "1080p HD" (shown below, left). Over the next three weeks, the post garnered upwards of 1,100 votes (96% upvoted) on /r/dankmemes.[2] On March 3rd, 2017, Redditor ExtraBigHeads uploaded an image comparing a screenshot of the cartoon character Race Bannon labeled "144p" to a photograph of United States Vice President "Mike Pence": labeled "1080p" (shown below, right). Within two weeks, the post gained over 3,200 votes (98% upvoted) on /r/dankmemes.[1]
On March 16th, 2017, Redditor JantonioValdez submitted a post stating that "Video quality memes are making a steady climb!" to /r/MemeEconomy.[3]
My Left Eye, My Right Eye
On May 21st 2020 Twitter user Nikhil tweeted:
illustrating the difference in their eyesight between their two eyes with two different quality images of a spongebob squarepants character.
From there the same two images paired together were used as memes to comment upon other disparities in quality or clarity between two things.
