Reject Me So I Can Move On is a catchphrase in which a person requests that another person, usually a celebrity, explicitly rejected them so they could finally abandon hopes of being romantically involved with them and moved on. Starting in late 2020, the phrase has been used as a simp comment on TikTok, Twitter and Instagram.

Origin

The popularity of the phrase as a social media comment started in late November 2020, when a comment "reject me so I can move on" on an unknown TikTok video went viral. On November 27th, 2020, Twitter^[1] user @crocprince mentioned the comment in a tweet that gained over 20 retweets and 150 likes (shown below).

Spread

The comment started gaining traction on TikTok and Twitter in January 2021, being used to simp for people. For example, on January 23rd, 2021, Twitter^[2] user @hoeybug tweeted the catchphrase as a comment about Canadian actor Avan Jogia (shown below, left). On January 27th, 2021, the catchphrase appeared in an episode of the South Korean drama series True Beauty, with the scene being shared as a clip and as image macros in the following days. For example, on January 28th, 2021, Facebook^[3] page Unnie posted a three-panel macro that gained over 46,000 reactions and 18,000 shares in one year (shown below, right).

Through 2021 and 2022, the catchphrase saw continuous use on TikTok, Instagram, Twitter as users commented on it to express their love and admiration for actors, musicians, models and internet celebrities. The phrase gained particular popularity among K-pop stans. For example, on December 18th, 2021, Twitter^[4] user @nct_127 tweeted the phrase about South Korean rapper Taeyong, with the tweet gaining over 1,600 retweets and 5,300 likes (shown below, left). On April 17th, 2022, Twitter^[5] user @allfoormyg posted a photograph of a Min Yoongi stan holding up a sign with the phrase at a concert (shown below, right). The post received over 120 retweets and 470 likes.
