About

Reddit Followers refers to a feature available on the social news aggregation website Reddit. Due to the relatively low popularity of the feature, having followers on the platform has become a popular in-joke among its users, often referenced in memes as an extremely challenging feat.

Origin

On May 22nd, 2018, a major redesign update became available for the majority users on the social news aggregation website Reddit.[1] One of the features added in the update allowed users to follow personal accounts of other Redditors, which allowed them to see posts made by them on their personal profiles in their feed.

Spread

In the following year, due to the low popularity of the feature, having followers on Reddit became jokingly regarded as a challenging feat. On January 26th, 2019, Redditor TheWolfRevenge made the first notable meme mentioning the feature, with the post gaining over 1,200 upvotes in six months.[2]

In early April 2019, multiple memes comparing having followers on Instagram and Reddit were posted on the platform, with having even a single-digit number of followers on Reddit presented as a notable achievement (examples shown below).[3][4]

In early August 2019, the joke saw another surge in popularity, primarily in /r/dankmemes[5] and /r/memes[6] subreddits.
