Recreating Instagram Stories is a social game where people film themselves randomly choosing Instagram Stories that they then have to recreate and then post to their own Story. The trend started on TikTok in early 2022 and inspired multiple iterations in the following months.
Origin
On February 10th, 2022, TikToker[1] tzonyuh posted a video that had a text overlay reading, "recreating instagram stories to feel something," and showed her and her friends randomly selecting Instagram stories and then recreating the photos they happened upon. Over the course of five months, the video received roughly 1.5 million plays and 224,500 likes (shown below).
Spread
On February 19th, 2022, TikToker[2] user2914502091814 posted their own iteration of the social game tzonyuh started, earning roughly 5.8 million plays and 1.1 million likes in five months (shown below, left). On February 21st, 2022, TikToker[3] ssamanthaashleyyy also made an iteration, earning roughly 232,800 plays and 39,900 likes in five months (shown below, right).
The trend continued to be redone by multiple TikTokers going into June 2022 with iterations receiving increased engagement over time. For instance, on June 30th, 2022, TikToker[4] camresha posted an iteration that received roughly 2.2 million plays and 566,000 likes in six days (shown below, left). Additionally, the trend spread to YouTube when on June 29th, 2022, YouTuber[5] Austin Sprinz posted a video that followed the trend, earning roughly 5,200 views in one week (shown below, right).
