On April 27th, 2018, Marvel superhero film Avengers: Infinity War premiered in the United States.[1] In one scene of the film, character Thanos, portrayed by Josh Brolin, reveals that he can alter reality.

Spread

On December 2nd, 2018, Redditor And_Morgoth posted the first known meme based on the scene, with the post gaining over 13,200 upvotes in six months (shown below, left).[2] On December 9th, 2019, Redditor to_pimp_a_butter_fly posted another meme based on the image to /r/dankmemes subreddit, where it gained over 20,200 upvotes in six months (shown below, right).[3]



In the following days, the format gained significant spread on Reddit. For example, December 10th, 2018, post in /r/PewdiepieSubmissions by user Tujja gained over 26,200 upvotes in six months (shown below, left).[4] December 18th post in /r/dankmemes by user generalofbread garnered over 38,300 upvotes in the same period (shown below, right).[5]



In the following months, the format saw moderate spread on Reddit, Instagram and other online platforms.
