Real Ou Feiki or Funny Arabic Rat refers to an image macro meme taken from the 2007 Pixar film Ratatouille. The meme involves a Photoshopped image of Django, the main character's father, with open arms and several Arabic phrases overlayed, with Portuguese text in the center, reading "Real ou Feiki." The image is used mainly in response to fake news content posted on social media. The image was popularized around September 2020 on iFunny, spreading across other platforms over the years.
Origin
On September 18th, 2020, iFunny[1] user @Mondredal_2020 posted a photoshopped image of Django, Remy's father in the 2007 Pixar film Ratatouille. The meme consists of several random Arabic phrases overlayed alongside the Portuguese text "Real ou Feiki," which purposely misspells the word "fake" as "feiki" and is translated as "real or fake." The post (shown below) garnered 2,400 reactions and 46 comments in three years.
Django's image macro has been used as a meme by the Arabic-speaking community since 2019. The earliest example found was uploaded on Reddit[2] by user /u/R4finha on August 20th, 2019. In his post (shown below), he asks for the English translation of some WhatsApp stickers, one of them being Django's meme. An unknown user responded to the post saying the rat sticker can be translated as "What happened, sir."
Spread
The meme remained in the iFunny community as an ironic reaction image related to "fake news" content shared on the platform. For example, on July 3rd, 2021, iFunny[3] user @Kaled_uploaded a different version of the "real ou feiki" meme replacing the text with the Portuguese phrase "unreal or true." The post (shown below, left) garnered 473 reactions and 5 comments in two years. On December 11th, 2021, iFunny[4] user @cazequi posted an image replacing the word "feiki" in the meme with Forza: Horizon 5 logo, commenting on the game's graphic realism. The post (shown below, right) received 6,000 reactions and 104 comments in two years.
On January 23rd, 2022, Facebook[5] meme page @KamiSamaExplorer posted a Photoshopped version of the meme replacing the rat with Dragon Ball Z's villain Frieza. The post (shown below) garnered 212 likes and 5 shares in a year.
