Rarted

About

Rarted is a misspelling of the word retarded, which is typically used as a tongue-in-cheek pejorative in various shitposting and circlejerk communities online in a similar vein to the mock insult “you're [sic] mom gay”.

Origin

On September 4th, 2008, Urban Dictionary^[1] user Seth Fanning submitted an entry for the term "rarted," defining it as an adjective used to describe something "stupid or logically flawed in an obvious or flaring way" (shown below).

Spread

On May 6th, 2017, Redditor deadfrog42 submitted a screenshot of a YouTube comment with the sentence "You are rarted" to /r/excgarate^[2] (shown below).

On February 2nd, 2018, Redditor NovaaTheKid submitted a screenshot of a "you are rarted" YouTube post written by user Joseph man9062 to /r/engrish, which gained over 5,700 points (95% upvoted) and 100 comments within one month (shown below).

On February 24th, Redditor OkayThen6969 submitted a copypasta using the term several times to /r/copypasta^[4] (shown below).

The following day, Redditor Shamjar1 posted an Esther Verkest's Help Sign edit with the caption "If you don't help you're mom rarted and triple gay" (shown below). Within 48 hours, the post gathered more than 800 points (94% upvoted) and 20 comments on /r/dankmemes.^[3]
