About
Quarantine Mustache is a facial hair trend that became popular during the March 2020 coronavirus outbreak. Through March and April, the hashtag #QuarantineMustache was used on Twitter and Instagram to share mustache progress photos while in quarantine.
Origin
On March 12th, 2020, Twitter user @jbillinson[1] tweeted, "I can’t wait until you all see the quarantine mustache I’m gonna grow" in response to Twitter user @hardin's tweet, "working from home for weeks on end is an excellent time to start cultivating and experimenting with different facial hair looks" (shown below).
Spread
On April 2nd, 2020, the Facebook[5] group Quarantine Mustache club was formed and has since gained over 100 followers. On April 13, 2020, Twitter user @KokonutRum[2] tweeted, "every man should be leaving quarantine with a mustache but that’s just my opinion" (shown below, left). The tweet gained over 2,900 likes and 400 retweets in four days. That same day, Twitter user @allahliker[3] tweeted, "to the tune of buffalo soldier quarantine mustache" (shown below, right) which accumulated over 1,900 likes and 190 retweets in four days.
On April 15th, Twitter user @BaileyCarlin[4] compared two images captioned, "What your man thinks he looks like with his quarantine mustache" and "What he actually looks like" (shown below, right). The tweet garnered over 80 likes in two days. Cosmopolitan[6] published an article on the growing trend.
