Putin Steak refers to a viral photograph of a raw piece steak in a grocery store that some say resembles Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Origin

On July 8th, 2019, The Sun[1] published a story about a photograph taken by Matt Gordon of an Aberdeen Angus steak on a shelf in an Aldi supermarket that some say resembles Vladimir Putin (shown below).

Spread

The following day, the Twitter [2] account for the This Morning morning show published the image next to an image of Putin. They wrote, "A shopper in Croydon did a double take doing his weekly shop when he spotted a steak that had a startling resemblance to… Russian leader Vladimir Putin!" The post received more than 20,000 likes and 5,000 retweets in three days (shown below, left). Twitter[3] user @silvesterldn tweeted, "Story of the day / week / millennium." The post received more than 4,700 likes and 1,500 retweets in three days (shown below, right).

Twitter[4] user @alistaircoleman tweeted, "BREAKING: Steak that looks like Putin eaten by dog that looks like Putin." The post received more than 1,000 likes and 160 retweets in three days (shown below).

On July 10th, Redditor [5] spellyalewitha6 posted the image in the /r/photoshopbattles subreddit. The post received more than 21,000 points (88% upvoted) and 370 comments. Over the next few days, other Redditors shared edited images that feature either Putin, the steak or both (examples below).
